Hello Dodo: hump day happiness

Happy hump day friends!

I met the wonderful Ali from Hello Dodo on the train back from Margate and was totally cool about it… not. I shouted “Oh my gosh you’re Hello Dodo! I love your Flamin’ go for it collaboration with Lucky Dip Club”. I was an absolute fan-girl! Who could blame me though, their collab was truly fabulous.

  1. Who are you and what do you do?

Hello! We are Ali and Jam and our business is called hello DODO. We are designers and playful printmakers and we create work to make people smile! We started out with screen printed posters after teaching ourselves to print at home and now our shop is a bit of an emporium of prints, t-shirts, jumpers, baby clothes, tote bags, cards, badges, pins and patches!

  1. How/where/why did Hello Dodo begin?

hello DODO began officially in 2011 after it sort of accidentally escalated from a fun little project we were doing together. I think on some level I was looking to start a creative business and get out of the cycle of being stuck in rubbish retail jobs and we had a lot of similar ideas and tastes, so working together was an easy step! We’ve never once doubted in the 6 years since that this is what we should be doing.
  1. What inspires your designs?

A lot of our designs are pun based, often featuring animals as they’re our favourite! We like to create designs that have a little clever thing going on so people really engage with them. We also like to keep things as simple as possible and not over complicate our work. Living by the seaside and also our black pug Hero have also been big inspirations!

  1. Who inspires you?

So many people! A few big inspirations are Dick Bruna (of Miffy fame), graphic designer Alan Fletcher, Matisse and so many people that we’ve met through Etsy and Instagram. I’m a bit obsessed with artist Elena Skoreyko Wagner, her work gives me all the feels and we’re listening to Andy J Pizza’s Creative Pep Talk pod cast at the mo which is excellent.
  1. What tools do you use to create your designs?

Everything starts as a wonky sketch (or series of sketches) in a notebook which we then finesse onscreen. Most of our work is screen printed and so we burn the design to silkscreen and then handprint it with our trusty squeegee, all from our home studio. Nothing beats pulling an inky squeegee!

  1. What is your favourite item to make?

Usually it’s whatever is brand new! We really enjoy printing our Gull Power and Hip Hop Bunny designs at the mo, we’re pretty proud of those. We’re also slightly addicted to designing iron on patches…
  1. What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

It’s probably because we only heard it this afternoon but Andy J Pizza’s podcast episode called ‘Don’t chase the likes..’ is all about going deeper rather than spreading yourself wider, which basically means creating work and social media posts that people actually engage with you about and have a deeper connection with you and your work rather than just concentrating on the numbers and seeking likes. Sometimes when you use social media everyday you can get a bit hung up on things so it was a fantastic reminder and well worth a listen!
