SFMGS: hump day happiness

Happy hump day friends!

Today’s hump day happiness features on of the brightest, fun, and most positive people on Instagram. I absolutely love following sfmgs, she has inspired me to give crochet a go. If you are already a crochet fan, you will be drunk in love with the colour and patterns she has on her website!

  1. Who are you and what do you do?

MIKI HEMPHILL HEADSHOT

Hi!Β  I’m Miki and I am a freelance crochet designer, crazy cat-lady and crochet & craft blogger. I share free crochet patterns and craft tutorials on my blog at sfmgs.co.uk and design for craft and crochet magazines, Hobbycraft and LoveCrochet.com. I live with my very-almost-husband and 7 cats and we are currently renovating a 1970’s 65ft Springer Narrowboat to be our permanent liveaboard home.Β  Eek!

  1. How/where/why did Set Free My Gypsy Soul (SFMGS) begin?

SFMGS was actually born quite unexpectedly! Practically since I could coordinate both hands, I’ve been making things… I just adore ALL THE CRAFT! But I do have a serious thing for yarn! I used to be a big knitter, my favourite thing to make was the most fabulously-ugly 80’s Intarsia sweaters I could find but one day I decided to cross to the ‘dark side’ and learn to crochet… and I have hardly touched my knitting needles since! I LOVE it so much… definitely a 110% certified crochet addict! I started posting on Instagram to connect with other yarn-addicts and sooo never expected to be lucky enough to turn my craft into a career… it still totally blows my mind every time I see someone working from one of my patterns around the world. All the feels!

  1. What inspires your designs?

Granny square scrapgan crochet pattern how to 1I truly think you can find inspiration everywhere you go! From a vintage print on a cute little 50p tea-towel in the local charity shop, to a delicious colour combination in a packet of pic ‘n’ mix sweeties, or even just the vibe in a new window display on the high street when you are out shopping. Generally though, I love as much colour and texture as I can get, and just adore bright, free-spirited and modern Boho vibes. Mismatched colours, beautiful shiny metallics, and lots of fun shapes and texture… It all makes my heart beat faster!
  1. Who inspires you?

The infectious-creative nature of the crafting community as a whole is such a great source of inspiration if my crojo is a little low. There are so many talented crafters out there in all different areas of design! Seeing artists zealous excitement at starting a new project, or that mad dash to complete a project you are so very nearly finished… that’s what inspires me to get my hooky on or think about a new project.
  1. What tools do you use to create your designs?

ALL THE YARN!! 4-ply, DK, Aran, Chunky, Jersey, Super-Chunky, Cotton DK, Cotton Aran… I love them all, each one can create something so different… but I would be totally lost without my Tulip Etimo crochet hooks, they are so lightweight and fluid to work with! For making my ergonomic polymer clay Unicorn Horn Hooks, I also use Polymer Clay, as much glitter as I can gt my hands on and a sculpting tool. Other essentials include pom-pom makers, at least 8 pairs of scissors as I am always losing them and stitch-markers.

  1. What is your favourite item to make?

I genuinely do just love making all the things, and after a spate of making similar items I think it is essential to pick a new genre to keep things fresh and inspired but I do always come back to making cardigans, bags and just LOVE making mandalas. Working in the round and playing with new stitches, colour combinations and textures is so relaxing and clears my mind – that’s why I make a new free mandala pattern every Monday – it’s almost like meditation.

  1. What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

The best piece of advice I ever received is not crochet/craft related but I apply it to everything I do… ‘Just be you’. I think sometimes in modern society, and probably just by human nature too, it can be easy to get caught up in worrying about how we, or our work, fits or compares with everybody else. And that can kill your vibe… You’re you and you are awesome! Embrace your own style, your own way of working… make your own rules.
