Becka Griffin: hump day happiness

This week’s hump day happiness is provided by Becka Griffin…

  1. Who are you and what do you do?

I’m Becka, I’m an illustrator based in Liverpool.  I draw a lot of foody things, but at the moment I am working on a series of architecture-based UK skyline images.

  1. How/where/why did Becka Griffin Illustration begin?

I have a degree in Graphic Arts from Liverpool John Moores University, but I didn’t do anything with this when I graduated (back in 2002).  I had a career in licensed retail, and then worked in a call centre for a national Housing Association.  I didn’t start drawing again until I was 30, and then it was initially as a hobby.  I then started selling on Etsy and then NOTHS.  In 2014 things really took off and I gave up my day job.  I’ve been a full time illustrator for just over three years now, and I love it!
  1. What inspires your designs?

I love food – I’m a keen cook, and love healthy veggie food – most of my foody puns support this (although a few meaty puns have slipped in, who could resist the genius pun opportunity of “thanks for bacon me so happy”).  I’ve also been obsessed with architecture for years – when I did my art foundation course I drew so many houses, and these were the first thing I went back to drawing after my illustration hiatus.

  1. Who inspires you?

I am part of an amazing network of independent artists and designers, most of whom I have met through Etsy and NOTHS.  On a business level, these people are absolutely my inspiration.

I am also Captain of the Merseyside Etsy Team – a truly amazing community of local makers and sellers.

On a creative level, I find that my customers are very much my inspiration – the suggestions and ideas they come up with are just incredible, and often send me in a direction I would never have thought of!

  1. What tools do you use to create your designs?

I draw everything by hand, using either pen and ink or watercolour paint.  I then transfer this onto the computer and work on it digitally to create the final images.

  1. What is your favourite item to make?

At the moment it has to be my City Landmarks illustrations.

With these images I ask on social media for people’s suggestions for landmarks in any given city, and I am blown away by the response.  I work directly from these suggestions, resulting in a truly collaborative piece of work every time (including really special local landmarks such as Cardiff’s Chippie Lane, and Glasgow’s statue with a cone on his head).  I’m working on Hull at the moment, and am looking at drawing the Lake District next and then Leicester and Nottingham – keep your eyes on my Facebook and Instagram if you know any of these places!

  1. What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

I think it’s probably that “positivity breeds positivity”.  Community is a huge aspect of what I do, and I have seen myself in various online groups – and in-person communities – how toxic and pervasive ongoing negativity can be.  I do my very best to keep a positive mindset about my business and my work.  There’s no point in doing it otherwise, is there?!

The wonderful Michelle from Wink Design nominated Becka Griffin to be in one of our hump day happiness features and I am so glad that she did! I was instantly drawn to Becka’s Cardiff and Edinburgh landmarks illustrations as I live near Cardiff and my sister lives in Edinburgh. Alongside her city landscapes she has a huge selection of themes alphabet illustrations. My favourites are the space and biscuit alphabets pictured above but there are many more in her Etsy shop including Alice in Wonderland,  Arts and Crafts, the Beatles, Cycling and Dinosaurs.
