Hello Planet Prudence!
Planet Prudence’s illustrations make me laugh whenever I see them. I am so happy that she agreed to answer my hump day happiness questions….
Who are you and what do you do?
How/where/why did Planet Prudence begin?
I know I’ve been drawing my entire life (or at least as long as I can remember), but the character from Planet Prudence came to life when I worked as a call centre agent, and the job didn’t excite me much. Personally, I loved the job because I was able to draw, haha :D. At that moment, it was five years ago since I last made a proper drawing, because teachers at art school told me I was never going to be an artist and people would never like my work. So all of the sudden, I was there at my desk, and I was drawing all the things I wish I did instead of sitting there. And from the first drawing, it immediately was my character I still use now. Although she was a bit less sophisticated (she didn’t have a nose at that time and I was so rusty because I didn’t draw in like five years). But from that moment on, I knew I was just pushing away my passion for five years, but it never died of course. That’s how it goes with a passion.
What inspires your designs?
I get inspired by everyday situations and thoughts. I have a rich fantasy so I don’t look at other people’s work to get inspired, I just think about my own awkward life and then I come up with ideas :D. It’s so funny because every day I think that I won’t be able to come up with anything, and then there it is. Something happens and then I’m like “yep, that’s it”
Who inspires you?
I don’t get inspired by others for ideas, but I do get inspired by other artist’s life. Being or becoming a full time artist is not easy, and then I’m here, on this road and the hope to become a full time artist someday (because I’m not there yet). And their lives inspire me to continue working hard on my drawings and to draw every day so I can be a full time illustrator someday.
What tools do you use to create your designs?
I use mainly markers, fineliners and a sketchbook, but sometimes I do digital art as well (not for Instagram, but if people insist on doing a digital piece, I just take my tablet and make a digital piece :D)
What is your favourite item to make?
I really really really like my comics. They’re my babies and I love them so much! I love to make portraits as well, it’s so nice to draw all these different faces and lovely couples and families! It’s just all a positive thing, and it feels good to spread the love some more and make people happy.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
|Sadly enough, I never received good advice from anyone else. I just received much hate and people saying I can’t be an artist, it’s way too hard, I won’t make it as an artist or “stop dreaming”.
The advice I gave myself is “prove them wrong”
Planet Prudence Goodies
My boyfriend is convinced that Planet Prudence is me. There aren’t many blue eyed, purple/blue haired girls with glasses out there ya know! I love the humour Prudence brings to her illustrations. I think Prudence is inspiring for following her dream to be an artist when so many people told her not to. She has definitely proved them wrong, Prudence has over 80 thousand (yes you read that correctly) followers/fans of her work on Instagram.
Six pack of Planet Prudence Post Cards: €10,00
I was over the moon when I discovered that she had a six pack of Planet Prudence postcards for sale. They arrived in perfect condition all of the way from Belgium.
My favourite had to be this NETFLIX comic:
Although, they are all amazing. Prudence’s sense of humour is spot on. Prudence has recently started to upload videos on YouTube where you can watch her drawings come to life.
