This week’s hump day happiness is being provided by Niaski.
Niaski is run by Nia from her home is Exeter. I had to include her in hump day happiness during national pet month because she has three cats called Sampson, Salvador and Socket AND her illustrations are cat themed! I’ll let her tell you a bit more about herself…
Who are you and what do you do?
Hello. I’m Nia, the person behind Niaski. I am a graphic designer / Illustrator
How/where/why did Niaski begin?
I’ve been working as a freelance designer for 10 years now and have always worked for other people, 2 years ago I was teaching on a degree course and took a refresher class on screen printing, this led me to start to develop my own work and skills and Niaski started to become a brand in itself and develop into what you see now.
What inspires your designs?
Cats and the arts.
Who inspires you?
I have always loved David Shrigley’s work, the humour and simplicity is something I really admire. In all honesty though it has to be my Mum, sounds like a cliché but she is an Art Teacher and took a degree in Fine Art later in her career which meant I was able to go along to art college as a kid and this was a really inspiring place to be.
What tools do you use to create your designs?
Everything I do I create directly on screen. Mouse & computer.
What is your favourite item to make?
I love print, so I am always looking to create my work in as many forms of print as possible.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Picture it and it will happen.
I found Niaski’s illustrations when I was looking for an art-related cards. Luckily for me, Niaski has a collection where she draws cats as different artists. Amazing!
I went what one might say “a bit O.T.T” and bought five cards instead of the one I originally planned to buy and send to my sister. You see, she has an offer in her Etsy shop where you can buy 5 cards for £10.00. When it comes to stationery, I can avoid everything except temptation.
Nia had popped all of my cards into a pink and white zig zag paper bad with a lovely Idoodle of a cat saying “check meow” washi taped to the front. It was a great touch. Each card is printed on beautifully textured FSC 300gsm Accent Calisto paper. The illustrations capture each artist beautifully. I found some lovely Van Gogh inspired washi tape by SusieBSupplies to go with this card. I think this is actually my favourite card from her collection.
Or maybe Pablo Picatso is?
Frida Catlo is probably Niaski’s most famous design. I bought two of this design and I am going to send it to Australia to my friend from Primary School.
Georgia O’Cat. Georgia O’Keefe was one of the first artists I learned about in school that I actually fell in love with. I adore her paintings! This little feline version didn’t disappoint either.
There are more artists available in Niaski’s shop:
I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
